I am, and always have been, a music fanatic. In fact, my whole family is; it’s a must-have whenever we get together. The music blares and the singing (and laughter) quickly follows. For me, music is also a must-have for workouts. Have you ever really thought about why everyone seems to (or used to, thanks to podcasts!) listen to music while they exercise?  From my experience, many of the reasons are due to the fact that the music “pumps you up”, puts you in the zone, or gives you a little extra energy boost.  Ever notice how you feel while listening to music doing other activities, such as studying, writing, gardening, things around the house, driving, etc?  Certain physical responses, which may be described as uplifting or happy, can be elicited as well.  Depending on the type of music and activity, anger can be induced.  Music literally changes how you physically feel and perform.

How else can we use music to our advantage?  Check this out – there are sound frequencies that have been shown in both the modern scientific world, as well as in ancient times, to physically affect the human body:

Some of these frequencies can alter our brain wave patterns so that we become more relaxed, focused and can get “in the zone”.  We can also perform physically better in certain brain wave states when we are “in the zone”.  Here’s a great description of come different brain wave states:

“Most of us live the majority of our lives in a state of primarily beta brain waves – aroused, alert, concentrated, but also somewhat stressed. When we lower the brain wave frequency to alpha, we can put ourselves in an ideal condition to learn new information, perform more elaborate tasks, learn languages, analyze complex situations and even be in what sports psychologists call “The Zone”, which is a state of improved focus and performance in athletic competitions or exercise. When you listen to some of these specific frequencies within music or on their own, you can create the same brain wave state. How to use sound to improve physical health – Try listening to music that incorporates the Solfeggio frequencies and see if you experience a physical change in your mood, thoughts and feelings.  When you are driving, out for a walk, doing things around the house and don’t feel like listening to anything in particular, give that a try.  In some people the sound frequencies have been shown to improve/cure certain conditions like high blood pressure, upset stomach, headache, arthritis, and a bunch of others.  Also, when you are feeling down throw on some uplifting music because it really can alter your state!
